Purpose & Operation of Non-Profit Organizations
Running a nonprofit organization is as serious as operating a for-profit business. The BOD starts with the 5W: who/what/why/where/when --> How.

Normally, the board of directors (or stockholders of a for-profit company) as the governing body should set the mission, raise capital, and hire the CEO who is to build a team. Under the direction of the CEO, the team as the executive branch should understand the mission, the market niche, formulate a master plan with a budget and timeline, then execute the master plan step by step, and modifies the strategy if something unforeseen happens. At the end, the team should learn from the success and failure of each project, to get ready for the next challenge. In electronic design, we call it a close-loop operation. Apple Computers' buildings are called Infinite Loop #1, #2, #3,….? This is the implication of improving its products continuously toward excellence.

经营一个非营利性组织和营利的企业是同样严肃的事。通常,理事会作为最高权力机构设置目标,筹集资金,并聘请CEO以建立团队。团队作为行政部门应该接受使命,了解市场,制定人事,预算,和时间表的总体计划,然后一步步执行总体规划,如果事情有无法预料的变故,便机动修改策略。最后,我们应该从成功和失败中学习改进, 做好准备以迎接下一个挑战。我们的电子工业称之为 close loop(辩证法) 你知不知道苹果公司的楼宇命名为 Infinite Loop (无限次辩证)。这是要求员工不断提高其产品质量, 努 力追求完美。

1. Start from zero - as an individual/organization: start with 5W (what/why/who/where/when.) Know your own resources & limitation - funding, personnel, expertise, time. Like a chef preparing a meal - based on the ingredients available. We should be always on the learning curve. Learn to lead yourself first before you can lead others. Always willing to do the most basic service (dirty work) and willing be a supporter in a team. Growth - new frontiers (bigger scale, higher level, and innovation that all require knowledge, experiences, and new ideas. President Kennedy was praised: "People see things as they are and ask why? President Kennedy sees things that have never been and ask why not?"

从零开始 - 作为一个个体/组织:

先问5W: a. .What 做什么? b. Why 为什么? c. Who 谁来做? d. Where 在哪里做? e. When什么时间? 首先确定目的, 之后了解自己的资源与局限,中国人有句话:天时,地利,人和。例如 资金,人才,专业知识,时间等等。就像一个厨师,有什么材料做什么菜。不要空谈。营利或非营利机构必须学会如何建立团队(teamwork)。必须先规划,后行动。通常的错误是先做后想,为时已晚。

b. 要求自己总在学习中; 先做自己的领导者,才能做其他人的领袖, 并愿意做最基层面的业务。发展业务便 要发展 新领域,例如更大规模,更高水平,改革创新,都需要知识,经验和新思路。

c. 更高层次的人是追求梦想的人. 肯尼迪总统在他的追悼大会被称赞: People see things as they are and ask why, but President Kennedy sees things that have never been and asks why not?

人们看到的许多现象总问为什么? 但肯尼迪总统看到从来没有的, 会问为什么不能?
501(c)(3)非营利组织可以说是美国半官方机构。政府鼓励人们作出免税捐款支持这类组织,但政府会非常严密监管运作,以免人民假公济私作弊逃税。如果被证明逃税,除了罚款,还要坐牢。在美国,政府机关,基金会, 私营公司(如Apple, Google, HP, Cisco, 个人等等都捐钱支持501(c)(3)组织。为什么呢, 501(c)(3)组织是为社会服务的。 很多人误解认为非营利等于不赚钱和不收费。非营利是不为私人赚钱,但必须为公家赚钱。所以,像美国这样商业化的社会, 营利或非营利机构必须学会经营赚钱, 如何达到收入和支出平衡。很多企业倒闭,因为他们不懂经营和理财。大多数艺术家忽视这门认识。特别是非营利组织,缺乏资金,人才,如何才能实现我们的目标? 重要的是要学会如何以少胜多,古今中外如是。
